Hintertux Glacier

We are staying in Schwendau, a small village near Mayrhofen town in the Austrian Alps.

Located a short distance from Mayrhofen, is the Hintertux Glacier – a year-round skiing and snowboarding destination.

The very first day in the area we went to a ski-rental shop to find out about the local conditions. Unfortunately we were told that this mountain is not suitable for beginners as you have to start on a red run to get to the blue run. Also, the baby slopes – usually further down the mountain – has no snow in the summer.

It was a huge disappointment as all of us were very excited about the prospect of skiing in the Alps.

The next day we still decided to go up and check it all out. So, we took 3 different cable cars to get to the top of the mountain. At the first station, Sommersberg (2,100m) is a restaurant and play area for the kids.

As the cable car went higher to the he second stop, Tuxer Fernehaus at 2,660m above sea level, we started seeing snow. We made a quick stop here to have a play in the snow. It was the kids’ first time ever seeing snow, so snowball fights and snowman were a must!

It was at the station, Gefrorene Wand, on the top of the mountain (at 3,250m!) where the real fun began. It was buzzing with skiers and snowboarders and there was even the Glacier Bug Park – probably the highest kids playground in Europe! The kids had an absolute ball tubing down a little hill in the snow.

Up a few steps to the Panorama Terrace, the views of the surrounding mountains covered in ice and snow were amazing.

On the way down, we stopped at the second station for a drink and ice creams and enjoyed seeing the skiers and snowboarders coming down the mountain to the cable cars.

Even though we couldn’t ski, it was still a wonderful experience all round!
