Salzburg and “The Sound of Music” have a special connection as the city served as the backdrop for the iconic 1965 musical film.
We had 3 nights in town and took our time to see some of the filming locations and local sites:
Mirabell Gardens – where several scenes from the film were shot, including the famous “Do-Re-Mi” sequence. You can recognize the Pegasus Fountain, the steps, and the hedges featured in the movie.
Frohnburg Palace – used in the movie as the front facade of the Von Trapp family home. This palace is privately owned and not open to the public, but we viewed it from the street.
We spent some time exploring the Old Town with a few more filming locations and even saw Mozart’s birthplace.
Just outside Salzburg, we took a drive to the Eagle’s Nest, a mountaintop retreat built for Adolf Hitler. It is a restaurant today and all the tourist busses outside stopped us from going in. Unfortunately you can’t really see much from the outside.
On the way out of town, we stopped at the top of the hill overlooking the city and the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
