Plitvice Lakes

After another 2 and a half hour drive from Zagreb, we arrived at our next Airbnb in the very small village, Licko Petrovo Selo, just outside of the Plitvice Lakes National Park.

On Tuesday morning (20th June) we started the day at the Plitvice Lakes at Entrance 1 (definitely the better one of the two entrances). Our Airbnb host suggested we follow Route C through the park as it takes about 4 hours to see the best spots.

Plitvice Lakes National Park was one of the first natural sites worldwide to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site (in 1979).

The lakes are renowned for their distinctive geological formations – characterised by limestone and dolomite rock formations. Over time, the water has carved out numerous caves, sinkholes, and limestone barriers, creating stunning cascades and waterfalls.

The Plitvice Lakes are renowned for their amazing colours and incredible clarity. The waters range in hues from azure blue to emerald green, thanks to the minerals and organisms present in them.  detail.

The National Park consists of sixteen interconnected lakes, which are arranged in cascades. These lakes are divided into the Upper Lakes (Gornja jezera) and the Lower Lakes (Donja jezera). The water flows from one lake to another through a series of waterfalls and cascades, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

The park is also home to a series of magnificent waterfalls, the most famous of which is Veliki Slap (the Great Waterfall). With a height of 78 meters, it is the tallest waterfall in Croatia. Other notable waterfalls include Milanovacki Slap, Galovacki Slap, and Pevalekovi Slapovi.

To allow visitors to explore the park, a network of wooden footbridges and pathways has been constructed. These well-maintained trails wind their way around the lakes, waterfalls, and through the lush forested areas, providing stunning views and a close-up experience of the park’s natural beauty.

Interestingly Plitvice Lakes National Park served as a filming location for the popular fantasy TV series “Game of Thrones.” The landscapes and waterfalls were used to depict the fictional land of Westeros.

It did take us about 4 hours to complete the route, which also included a boat ride across one of the largest lakes and then (thankfully!) the shuttle bus back to the entrance.

We were nice and tired after a day of amazing scenery in a very special part of the world! And to end an awesome day, we went out for (delicious and very cheap compared to the rest of Europe!) pizza in one of the little restaurants in the National Park.
