During our time in the German Bavarian Alps, we stayed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a beautiful little town in the mountains and interestingly, the only town in Germany to have ever hosted the Winter Olympics (since 1936!).

Garmisch and Partenkirchen were originally two separate towns. In 1935, Adolf Hitler merged them into one municipality in preparation for the 1936 Winter Olympics.

The town is situated at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain, Zugspitze and our side of town (the Partenkirchen side) is full of colourful traditionally painted houses.

The area is so beautiful with many stunning, crystal-clear, turquoise mountain lakes. On our last day, we took the kids to the nearby Eibsee for a swim.

Next stop: Saas-Balen
