We left Tuscany on Friday, 9th June and drove about 5.5 hours to our next destination – Santa Lucia di Cava near Salerno on the Amalfi Coast.

DAY 1

After a turbulent start to the day (one of the kids got car sick, twice!) we were finally on the boat from Salerno to Positano. The weather was not great, but luckily it improved throughout the course of the morning.

We spent a couple of hours exploring the narrow and very steep streets with dozens of shops all selling everything ceramic, hand-painted mostly with pictures of lemons.

Apparently the region has abundant clay deposits, making it an ideal location for pottery production. The steep terraces that dot the hillsides of the Amalfi Coast are covered with lemon groves, adding to the area’s scenic beauty.

The combination of centuries-old ceramic craftsmanship and the abundance of high-quality lemons has made these two products iconic symbols of the Amalfi Coast.

The next stop (after a very hot and sweaty, hour long, packed public bus trip) was the small town that gives the coast its name, Amalfi.

We explored for a bit before catching another bus back to Salerno, where we parked our car.

DAY 2

Our plan was to visit Mount Vesuvius to see how close we could get to the volcano’s crater, but the weather didn’t play along. It started raining and the mountain was covered in clouds, so we turned around and decided to go to Sorrento instead.

The sunshine, beautiful panoramic views of the coast, the harbour and Mount Vesuvius in the background, made it a much more pleasant stop. We also finally got to sample the famous Limoncello Spritz at a little hilltop cafe.
