After a quick stop in Milan, we drove to Lake Como. Once we made through the insanely narrow streets and up a very steep hill, we arrived at to our Airbnb in the small village, Argegno.
Argegno is a small and quaint village that overlooks Lake Como and we decided to have pizzas at a nice little restaurant right on the lake and with a pool.
Our next day, Monday, 24th July, was very rainy so we had a rest-day – catching up on work.
Luckily Tuesday, was a beautiful sunny day, so we started our day in the city of Como – about 30 minutes drive from Argegno. We explored the Old Town, visited the Como Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) and had some lunch in the Piazza.
To make the most of the sunshine, we then drove up to Menaggio where we got the ferry across to Bellagio – one of the most famous and picturesque towns located on the shores of the lake.
Bellagio is situated at the intersection of the three branches of Lake Como, giving it a unique position surrounded by the lake.
We were so impressed by the beautiful Lake Como with its distinctive Y shape – with three branches that extend in different directions: Como to the southwest, Lecco to the southeast, and Colico to the north.
Lake Como was formed during the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago. It was created by the melting of glaciers that carved out the deep valley and left behind the beautiful lake we see today. It is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, with a maximum depth of approximately 410 meters. Its depth contributes to its striking blue colour and clarity.
The lake’s breathtaking scenery has made it a popular filming location for several movies and TV shows. The iconic Villa del Balbianello, located on the lake’s western shore, has been featured in movies such as Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and James Bond’s Casino Royale. It is also a famous destination for celebrities and apparently George Clooney’s villa was not far from our Airbnb, but it is only visible by boat.
We loved Bellagio and stayed at at hotel Bellagio looking over the corner of the lake and would go back there anytime. Thoroughly enjoying following your journey.
