Day 1
We arrived at our Airbnb in Mira – about 30km from Venice – late afternoon and met the owner of the property. He gave us some great local travel and sightseeing advice.
Day 2
As per advice from our host, we parked the car at Mira station and took the train into Venice Santa Lucia station (30 minutes).
Marizanne’s parents arrived in Venice today for an 2 night stay before they depart on a 7-day cruise.
We met them at San Marco square where they arrived by water bus from the airport. After a quick hotel stop, we started exploring the Venice canals, narrow streets and many churches and piazzas.
The highlights today include:
- Piazza San Marco – the heart of Venice with the San Marco Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and many lively cafes.
- Grand Canal – Venice’s main waterway where the traffic never stops – from the public transport boats, water taxis to private boats and the very romantic Gondola’s taking tourists around.
- Rialto Bridge – the iconic bridge crossing the Grand Canal.
- Pizza on the Canal – we had to stop at one of the many Pizzerias on the canal for the obligatory Italian pizza experience.
- Spritz Veneziano – we all finished a very full, but amazing day with a bright orange, wine-based cocktail made with a locally produced spirit, Select. We decided to have this cocktail at the hotel where M’s parents are staying, rather than on San Marco square – where a single beer (or coffee for that matter) will set you back 18 Euros!
Day 3
Our day started early to catch the 7.45am train into Venice where we met M’s parents for breakfast at their hotel.
After a lovely buffet breakfast we headed to catch a boat across to the islands. Our island hopping started at Murano – renowned for its long tradition of glass-making.
We decided to explore the island on our own and spent a few hours the canal side streets. The next stop was a little further away – the island Burano.
Burano is a picturesque island in the Venetian Lagoon known for its vibrant colourful houses and lace making.
Here we stopped for lunch at a little cafe and another Sprtiz cocktail was well deserved.
After the boat ride back to Venice we had to say very sad good-byes to M’s parents. Even though the Venice visit was short, it was very special and such a privilege and blessing to be able to explore this beautiful city with them.
Day 4
The last day in the Venice area was rainy and much cooler and we enjoyed a very relaxing day, catching up on work (and the odd downloaded tv series).
